Mary Hanlon is an artist based in New York City whose practice includes filmmaking, new media art and installation. Her work is a reflection on—or a revision of—the myths and ideologies that influence visual culture and explores themes of gender, technology, and fractured female identities. She often appropriates archival footage in an effort to interrogate the material and create space for new narratives to emerge.
Mary earned her BA from The New School and is an MFA candidate at Hunter College. She has been a contributing writer for The Brooklyn Rail and Girls Against God, and her installations and short films have been shown in New York and internationally. She was the recipient of a MacDowell Colony fellowship in 2014.
