Mary Hanlon is an award-winning filmmaker and new media artist based in upstate New York. Her work is a reflection on—or a revision of—the myths and ideologies that influence visual culture and explores themes of gender, technology, and fractured female identities. She often appropriates archival footage in an effort to interrogate the material and create space for new narratives to emerge.

Mary earned her BA from The New School and an MFA from Hunter College. She has been a contributing writer for The Brooklyn Rail and Girls Against God, and her films and installations have been shown in New York and internationally. She was the recipient of a MacDowell fellowship in 2014.
